New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday asked its four chief ministers to prepare reports on reforms needed in the education and examination systems in their respective states and submit them to party president Mallikarjun Kharge within a month.

The party also announced that its 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' programme will be held in nearly 800 cities across the country, with Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi participating in several cities.

The programme has already been held in Kota, Dehradun and Prayagraj and is scheduled to be held in Pune on Saturday.

The decisions were announced after a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) at Indira Bhawan, chaired by Kharge and attended by senior leaders, including former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K C Venugopal.

Congress chief ministers A Revanth Reddy (Telangana), V D Satheesan (Kerala), Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu (Himachal Pradesh) and D K Shivakumar (Karnataka) also attended the meeting.

Briefing reporters, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Ramesh said Kharge and Rahul Gandhi had asked the four chief ministers to compile reports on reforms needed in the education and examination systems of their states within a month.

Sources said Rahul Gandhi stressed that the reports should be prepared in consultation with education experts and all stakeholders, with the objective of improving the education and examination systems and securing the future of students.

In his opening remarks, Kharge accused the Narendra Modi government of "destroying" the future of students and said the Congress should formulate a comprehensive 'Education-to-Employment Roadmap' for the youth.

In a resolution, the CWC said it was "deeply distressed" by the plight of the youth and alleged that the younger generation was facing disappointment and betrayal from the Modi government.

The resolution alleged that at least 152 paper leak cases had been reported since 2014 and claimed that the cancellation and re-conduct of the NEET examination resulted in at least 26 student suicides.

It also said unemployment among educated youth had become a "crisis of systemic government failure".

The CWC condemned what it called "arbitrary and brutal repression" of student movements and alleged attacks on protesters and censorship of dissent.

The resolution lauded Rahul Gandhi for raising youth concerns through the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' campaign and said sustained pressure from student groups and the Opposition had compelled the education minister to resign.
