New Delhi: Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Friday said discussion, debate and dissent in a democracy should lead to decision-making in the national interest rather than disruptions.

Addressing the RNG Excellence in Journalism Awards organised by The Indian Express, he emphasised that for democracy to grow, it must accommodate “right” suggestions from all quarters.

His remarks come amid frequent disruptions during the ongoing Budget session of Parliament. As Vice President, Radhakrishnan also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

He also said that in the name of neutrality, presenting opposing statements side by side is not always justified, as both cannot be true, and the focus should remain on truth.

Highlighting inclusive development, he said it must ensure that even the remotest regions are not left behind.

Radhakrishnan also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Abraham Lincoln for their efforts to uplift the underprivileged.

Indian Express Group Chairman Vivek Goenka said artificial intelligence cannot replace journalists' ability to build trust with sources.
