Mumbai: EcoFuel Systems (India) Ltd has secured a ₹66 crore work order from the Tamil Nadu government to convert 850 diesel buses to run on CNG, marking a major step in the state's green mobility drive.

The large-scale retrofit project, to be completed within 12 months, is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 5.7 lakh tonnes annually. Officials said the initiative will position Tamil Nadu as a leader in sustainable public transport while offering significant cost savings to operators.

With this contract, EcoFuel's tally of converted buses in India will cross 1,500, making it one of the largest players in the diesel-to-CNG retrofit segment. The company will deploy its certified conversion kits, designed to meet European standards and BS-VI norms, ensuring fuel efficiency, safety and seamless integration.

“This is a proud moment for us. Tamil Nadu's decision reflects its progressive leadership in clean mobility,” said Virendra Vora, Founder and Chairman of EcoFuel Systems. “Our retrofit technology reduces carbon footprint while ensuring economic viability for transport companies,” he added.

The project supports India's climate commitments and aligns with the National Green Mobility Plan, which targets low-emission public transport by 2030. Experts say retrofitting diesel buses with CNG offers a cost-effective alternative to electric buses, avoiding high capital expenditure.

EcoFuel, with over two decades of experience in clean fuel solutions, has earlier undertaken projects for Ola, Meru Cabs, Reliance Industries and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation.
