New Delhi: ETS, the global leader in education assessment, has unveiled significant updates to the TOEFL iBT® test to better serve today's learners worldwide, including students in India.

Starting January 2026, the test will introduce adaptive testing for the Reading and Listening sections, offering a personalized experience tailored to individual performance. This adaptive format aims to provide a fairer and more relevant assessment of English proficiency.

In addition to adaptive testing, ETS will roll out faster score reporting, with results delivered within 72 hours or less—helping Indian students meet critical application deadlines efficiently.

Score reporting will also become simpler and more aligned with international standards, featuring dual scores on the traditional 0-120 scale and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale (1-6). This will make it easier for students and institutions to interpret results.

Improvements to the TOEFL iBT Home Edition begin May 30, 2025, enhancing the at-home testing experience with ETS-trained proctors, AI-assisted identity verification, and a streamlined registration process to reduce stress and administrative hurdles.

Additional upgrades include the introduction of new academic content that reflects real-world use of English, replacing niche or culturally specific topics, and the deployment of advanced 'stereophones' headphones developed with audio brand Koss for better sound quality in test centers worldwide.

Since 1964, TOEFL iBT has been a trusted measure of English proficiency for over 13,000 institutions globally, including all top universities in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. These updates aim to maintain its high standards while evolving the test experience to be more accessible, fair, and relevant to modern learners.
