Indian institutions witness a drop in positions as Asia's top research universities are ranked.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has once again emerged as the highest-ranked Indian institution in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2025, securing the 38th position. Despite leading the Indian contingent, IISc slipped six spots from its previous rank of 32 in 2024.
Anna University and IIT Indore are the next best performers among Indian institutions, ranked at 111 and 131, respectively. Mahatma Gandhi University follows at 140. However, these institutions have also seen a marginal decline in their rankings compared to last year. Anna University moved up from 119 to 111, but Mahatma Gandhi University dropped from 134 to 140.

The 2025 rankings feature 853 universities from 35 countries and territories, showcasing Asia's leading research institutions. China dominates the top of the list, with Tsinghua University and Peking University securing the 1st and 2nd positions, respectively. Other top 10 spots are claimed by institutions in Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong.
Notably, four new entrants—Uzbekistan, Bahrain, Mongolia, and Syria—appear in the rankings for the first time. 
Meanwhile, all six of Hong Kong's ranked universities have entered the top 50, a first since 2017.
