Chennai: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) hosted the inaugural 'Pan IIT Student Governance Summit' on 26-27 October 2024, marking a significant step in uniting student governance across IITs to address evolving challenges in higher education.
The summit provided a collaborative platform for student representatives to exchange ideas and implement best practices, aiming to empower student-led transformation within IIT campuses.
The event featured discussions on topics such as “Sustainable Campus Policies,” “Academic Standards,” “Research Affairs,” and “Student Mental Health.” Attendees also explored placement policies, research infrastructure, and strategies for cultural and tech festivals. These sessions offered insights and tools to strengthen governance and enhance student experiences within IITs.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of student governance in addressing key issues and fostering institutional synergy. “The outcomes of this summit will be taken seriously by the administration,” he stated.
Prof. Sathyanarayana N. Gummadi, Dean (Students), highlighted the summit's role in equipping student leaders with strategies for impactful governance. Student Convenor Atharv Joshi expressed enthusiasm, calling the summit a unique opportunity for collaboration across IITs, creating lasting connections among student leaders, faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders.
