Chennai: Professor B. Ravindran of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras has been appointed to the United Nations' Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, the institute said.

Ravindran is currently Head of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI and Founding Head of the Centre for Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CeRAI) at IIT Madras.

The panel, established through a United Nations General Assembly resolution in August 2025, brings together global experts to assess the impact of artificial intelligence on societies and guide responsible and inclusive development of the technology.

IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti welcomed the appointment and said the panel would play a key role in ensuring AI contributes positively to society.

Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the panel comprises 40 experts from across regions and disciplines and aims to ensure that AI benefits all sections of society.

Reacting to his appointment, Ravindran said AI is a transformative technology affecting people across sectors and expressed honour at representing India and the Global South in the international panel.
