New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has retained the top spot in the Overall category for the seventh consecutive year, while Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been ranked the best University and Research Institution, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad led the Management category, and AIIMS Delhi topped the Medical category, according to the India Rankings 2025 released on Thursday.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who released the rankings based on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), congratulated the featured institutions and said NIRF has become a “national benchmark.” He emphasized that the framework is evolving into one of the best global accreditation systems and would continue to expand with more data-driven approaches, parameters, and institutional participation.

Minister of State for Education and DoNER Sukanta Majumdar said that with more than 14,000 applications from 7,692 institutions this year, NIRF has emerged as a credible framework promoting quality, equity, and innovation. Marking a decade of India Rankings, he said new additions such as SDG-based parameters ensure that Indian HEIs are future-ready and globally competitive.

The NIRF framework, launched in 2015, evaluates institutions on five parameters—Teaching and Learning (30%), Research (30%), Graduation Outcome (20%), Outreach and Inclusivity (10%), and Perception (10%). This year, 14,163 applications were received, nearly a 300% rise compared to 2016.

Highlights: IIT Madras retained its Overall and Engineering No.1 ranking, IISc Bengaluru continued its dominance in Universities and Research, IIM Ahmedabad led Management, AIIMS Delhi topped Medical and Dental, while Jadavpur University, IGNOU and Symbiosis Skill and Professional University secured first place in their respective categories. IIT Madras also topped the maiden Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) category.
