New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said India aims to develop technologies that address global challenges, highlighting the growing role of science, innovation and startups in improving healthcare, agriculture, education and employment.
Speaking at the inauguration of a conference on science, technology and innovation in the national capital, Modi said emerging technologies had the potential to transform several sectors and create new opportunities for people.
He expressed satisfaction that startups in India were increasingly focusing on developing innovative solutions to address important challenges.
The Prime Minister cited examples of startups and companies working in areas such as brain research, wireless connectivity, satellite-based communication and nutrition. He also highlighted developments in the semiconductor sector and research aimed at finding useful applications for industrial waste.
According to Modi, these efforts demonstrate how scientific research and technological innovation can help address practical problems and support economic development.
He also referred to the inauguration of an advanced brain research centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). The centre is working on technologies to study the structure and functioning of the human brain, including the development of three-dimensional digital maps.
The research could improve understanding of the brain and help scientists investigate complex neurological disorders. Such advances may eventually contribute to better methods of diagnosis and treatment, although their impact will depend on the outcomes of further research.
Modi said India's scientific and technological efforts should focus not only on developing advanced products but also on creating solutions that can benefit people in India and across the world.
The examples cited at the conference underline the importance of collaboration between research institutions, startups and industry in turning scientific discoveries into practical applications.
As India expands its technology and innovation ecosystem, the challenge will be to ensure that new developments translate into accessible, affordable and effective solutions for society.
The Prime Minister's remarks placed innovation and research at the centre of India's ambition to contribute to addressing global challenges through science and technology.
