Chennai: ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan on Monday inaugurated the 'Shri S. Ramakrishnan Centre of Excellence in Fluid and Thermal Science Research' at IIT Madras. The centre, housed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, will focus on advancements in spacecraft and launch vehicle thermal management, a critical domain for India's space ambitions.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Narayanan emphasized India's achievements in cryogenic engine technology, highlighting record-breaking advancements in development timelines. “Cryogenic technology was denied to India, but today we have three such engines, with the third being human-rated,” he said.
The research centre aims to develop cutting-edge cooling and heat transfer solutions for next-generation satellites and spacecraft. ISRO scientists will collaborate with IIT Madras researchers on key areas such as high-fidelity simulations, experimental cooling systems, and thermal management techniques.
The centre is named after Shri S. Ramakrishnan, an IIT Madras alumnus and eminent aerospace engineer who played a pivotal role in PSLV and GSLV Mk III development. The launch event also saw the inauguration of the 'Arcot Ramachandran Seminar Hall' by IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti.
Prof. Kamakoti expressed confidence that the new centre, in collaboration with ISRO, would deliver breakthroughs in spacecraft thermal technologies, supporting India's deep-space missions and indigenous space capabilities.
Senior ISRO officials, faculty, and researchers attended the event.
