Mumbai: The Narendra Jadhav committee, constituted last year to frame a three-language policy for schools in Maharashtra, has submitted its report to the state government, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Monday.

The multi-member panel, headed by economist and educationist Narendra Jadhav, was tasked with finalising the implementation of a three-language formula in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, amid political opposition to the alleged “imposition” of Hindi in the state, where Marathi is the dominant language.

Talking to reporters here, Fadnavis did not disclose the panel's recommendations, but said the report would be placed before the state cabinet, which would decide which suggestions to accept or modify.

The committee was formed in 2025 after the state government scrapped a Government Resolution (GR) issued in April that had made Hindi a compulsory third language for students in Classes 1 to 5 in English- and Marathi-medium schools, following widespread protests.

After the April decision triggered a strong backlash, the government issued an amended GR in June making Hindi optional, and subsequently set up the Jadhav panel to work out a consensus-based approach to implementing the three-language policy under the NEP.

Responding to queries on the hospitalisation of Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president Sharad Pawar in Pune, the Chief Minister said the stress caused by recent developments — referring to the death of Pawar's nephew and then deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar in an air crash on January 28 — may have affected the senior leader's health.

“Our prayers and wishes are with him,” Fadnavis said.
