New Delhi: The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) continue to play a key role in advancing equitable, high-quality education across India, aligning with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the PM SHRI scheme.
As of October 2025, 1,290 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and 662 Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs) are operational nationwide, serving over 16.5 lakh students. The Government has approved the establishment of 57 new KVs with an estimated outlay of ₹5,862.55 crore over the next nine years and 28 new NVs at a cost of ₹2,359.82 crore over five years.
KVS, established in 1963, caters primarily to children of transferable Central and State Government employees, ensuring continuity in education, while NVS, launched in 1986, offers free, residential schooling to meritorious rural students through a merit-based selection process.
Under the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, 913 KVs and 620 NVs have been upgraded as exemplar institutions integrating smart classrooms, activity-based learning, and sustainable practices. For 2024-25, NVS received ₹5,370.79 crore as grant-in-aid, while KVS continues to receive budgetary support for expansion and infrastructure.
Both systems are accelerating digital transformation—KVS has equipped 90% of its schools with smart classrooms and virtual labs, while NVS has installed 9,417 smart classrooms and 312 digital language labs under PM SHRI.
Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) through Balvatika is operational in 505 KVs, supporting foundational literacy and numeracy under NEP's 5+3+3+4 structure.
Together, KVS and NVS embody the government's vision of harmonising urban accessibility with rural empowerment, ensuring inclusive, future-ready education for every child.
