Glasgow: India's M. Sreeshankar qualified for the men's long jump final at the Commonwealth Games after crossing the automatic qualification mark with his first attempt on Monday.

Sreeshankar cleared 8.01 metres in Group A to secure direct qualification. The qualifying standard was set at 8.00 metres, with the remaining slots to be filled by the next best performers if required.

The 27-year-old, who has a season's best effort of 8.38 metres, is aiming to improve on the silver medal he won at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Sreeshankar is competing after making a comeback from a career-threatening knee injury. He suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in April 2024, underwent surgery and missed what would have been his maiden Olympic appearance at the Paris Games.

He regained form last month by recording his season's best jump of 8.38 metres at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.

Lokesh Sathyanathan, the other Indian competing in the event, was scheduled to take part in the Group B qualification later on Monday.

The men's long jump final will be held on July 29.
