Chennai: Madras University has decided to shift departments currently operating at its 90-year-old Marina campus in Triplicane to the Guindy campus, near Anna University, to facilitate renovation work.
The move follows structural concerns at the two-storey buildings of the Marina campus, where cracks have appeared in pillars and walls, and parts of the roof have collapsed.
The Public Works Department (PWD), which is overseeing the restoration, has instructed the university administration to vacate the campus to begin repair work while preserving its original architectural appearance.
To avoid disruption to academic activities, the foreign language departments of Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, along with nine other departments including Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Sanskrit, and Tamil Language and Literature, will be temporarily relocated to Guindy.
The administration also plans to soon shift the JBAS Centre for Islamic Studies and Thirukkural Research Centre to the Guindy campus.
Madras University has campuses at Chepauk, Triplicane, and Guindy.
