London: Minimalist parenting practices such as limiting gifts, encouraging experiences over possessions and regularly passing on unused items can help families reduce clutter, stress and environmental waste, according to new research.
In an article published by The Conversation, researcher Amber Martin-Woodhead of Manchester Metropolitan University said families are increasingly struggling with clutter as children quickly outgrow toys, clothes and furniture.
The study, based on interviews with 12 minimalist parents, examined how families intentionally living with fewer belongings manage children's possessions and reduce household stress.
According to the research, one common strategy involved discouraging impulse purchases by asking children to photograph items they wanted and revisit the request later during birthdays or festivals. Some families also limited gifts to four categories — something children want, need, wear and read.
Parents interviewed for the study also preferred gifting experiences such as zoo visits, cinema outings and trips to parks or libraries instead of material items.
The research highlighted the benefits of open-ended toys such as building blocks and magnetic tiles, which encourage imaginative play while reducing the need for excessive possessions.
Many parents also adopted strict organisation methods, including designated storage spaces and limits on the number of toys allowed in shared living areas.
The study noted that minimalist families usually donate, sell or pass on unused items quickly, helping reduce waste and extend the lifecycle of children's products.
