Puducherry: Pondicherry University (PU) underwent its fifth cycle of accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) from May 28 to 30.

The three-day assessment reviewed the University's performance over the past five years (2019-2024). The University, which secured an 'A' grade in 2018, aims for an improved grade in the current cycle.

For the first time, the evaluation followed a hybrid format. A two-member team visited the campus while five members participated online to ensure a comprehensive assessment. The visit commenced with an introductory meeting, where Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prakash Babu presented key achievements, academic offerings, infrastructure, research metrics, and international collaborations. A documentary titled Pondicherry University - Towards the Light of Knowledge was also screened.

The NAAC Peer Team held detailed discussions with faculty, IQAC members, and administrators. Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, IQAC Coordinator, outlined the University's quality initiatives, post-2018 developments, and feedback mechanisms involving various stakeholders. The team inspected laboratories, the Central Instrumentation Facility, and met with the Director (R&D) to assess research projects and funding utilization.

Day two included interactions with social outreach departments, students, alumni, and staff. Governance and infrastructure highlights included a 2.4MW solar plant and waste management systems. On the final day, best practices such as digital governance, community radio “Puduvai Vani,” and the Legal Clinic for Northeast students were showcased.

The outcome of the assessment is expected soon. A favourable rating is anticipated to boost the University's national and international standing.
