New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report on a tragic incident in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district, where a passenger train collided with a school van at an unmanned level crossing, resulting in the death of three children and injuries to several others.

The incident occurred on July 8, when the school van was hit by an oncoming train while the gate at the level crossing was reportedly open.

Taking note of the reported human rights violations, the Commission has issued notices to the Chairman of the Railway Board, the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, and the state Director General of Police. They have been asked to submit detailed reports within two weeks, including the current medical status of those injured.

According to the media report, published on July 9, an underpass had already been sanctioned by the Southern Railway to replace the level crossing. However, the construction has not commenced as approval from the district administration has been pending for over a year.

The NHRC observed that the delay in implementing the sanctioned safety measure raises concerns about official apathy and negligence, potentially contributing to the loss of young lives.

Further action will be considered upon receipt of the reports, the Commission said.
