Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday ordered the constitution of a three-member committee to identify those responsible for errors in textbooks prescribed for students of Classes 1 to 8.
The committee, headed by the Development Commissioner, has been asked to submit its report within seven days, officials said.
Majhi also directed the authorities concerned to immediately rectify printing mistakes in the textbooks introduced for the 2026-27 academic session.
The chief minister's order came a day after a section of teachers in government-run schools flagged several errors in the new textbooks, including spelling mistakes and incorrect references to eminent personalities and geographical locations.
The textbooks were prepared in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
According to Brahmananda Maharana, president of the Primary Teachers' Association, more than 1,600 errors have been identified in the books.
Citing examples, Maharana alleged that a photograph of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly had been used in place of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
He also claimed that the Niyamgiri Hills, located across Odisha's Kalahandi and Rayagada districts, had been incorrectly identified as being in Jharkhand.
The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) criticised the BJP government over the issue, accusing it of undermining the state's education system.
The party demanded the immediate withdrawal of the "defective textbooks" and sought a high-level inquiry into the matter.
