Chennai: A comprehensive workshop focused on the Conservation and Restoration of Oil Paintings on Canvas will be held from 6th to 16th December 2023 at Art Expressions. The state boasts a rich collection of oil paintings, ranging from renowned artists to those lesser known, dating back to the British Period.With numerous art enthusiasts and galleries dedicated to oil paintings on canvas, there is a growing need for artists to understand the proper care and preservation of these artworks. Many paintings lie idle in homes or storage spaces, their owners often unaware of the techniques required for maintenance.In response to this demand, a workshop has been organized to educate and train individuals interested in the conservation and restoration of oil paintings on canvas. The initiative is spearheaded by the Hepzibah Institute of Heritage Conservation, founded in 2009 by Dr. V Jeyaraj, the former Curator of the Chemical Conservation and Research Laboratory at the Government Museum, Chennai.The institute is renowned for conducting various training programs and workshops benefiting art collectors, museologists, archaeologists, artists, and art students. This upcoming workshop, in collaboration with Art Expressions, aims to address the specific challenges of refurbishing oil paintings.Scheduled from December 6th to 16th, 203, the workshop will focus on imparting valuable knowledge and techniques for the conservation and restoration of oil paintings on canvas. The selected artworks for refurbishment include pieces from the late Mr. P Krishnamurthy, a distinguished artist and art director in the film industry, along with other paintings from the Chaolamandal Artists Village.This workshop is open to students, artists, and anyone interested in learning the intricate art of preserving and restoring oil paintings. Participants can expect to gain hands-on experience and insights into various restoration techniques, contributing to the broader effort of safeguarding our artistic heritage.
