New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday conferred the National Awards to teachers from across the country on the occasion of Teachers' Day, urging them to play a pivotal role in making India a global knowledge superpower.

Speaking at a ceremony in New Delhi, the President said education, like food, clothing and shelter, is fundamental to human dignity and security. Recalling her own stint as a teacher, she described it as a deeply meaningful period of her life.

“Children from the poorest backgrounds can touch the skies of progress with the power of education. Affectionate and devoted teachers give them strength for this flight,” she said, adding that the biggest reward for teachers is being remembered by their students for life.

Murmu stressed that the foremost duty of teachers is to build character, noting that students imbued with sensitivity, responsibility and moral conduct are more valuable to society than those merely chasing competition and bookish knowledge. “A good teacher has both intellect and emotion, and their balance profoundly influences students,” she remarked.

Highlighting the role of technology in modern education, the President said that while smart classrooms and facilities are important, the nation needs “smart teachers” who understand the developmental needs of children and make learning effective through affection and sensitivity.

Underscoring the importance of girls' education, Murmu said investing in it is the most effective way to strengthen families, society and the nation. She pointed out that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 prioritises expanding Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and facilities for underprivileged girls, but added that the success of such initiatives ultimately depends on teachers.

“Our teachers must be recognised as the best in the world. Their contributions across school, higher and skill education will enable India to emerge as a global knowledge superpower,” the President asserted.
