Jaipur: A brief protest broke out during the convocation ceremony of Haridev Joshi University of Journalism and Mass Communication after only gold medallists were initially awarded degrees on stage, officials said.

As many as 12 gold medallists received degrees on stage before the programme concluded, prompting other students to protest and demand similar recognition.

Some students raised slogans and lay in front of the vehicle of Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa as he exited the venue.

Following the protest, Bairwa returned to the auditorium and resumed distribution of degrees on stage to other students.

Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde and Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani were also present at the event.

Addressing the gathering earlier, Devnani said journalism is a mission and stressed accuracy over speed in the digital era. Bairwa highlighted the role of media in public awareness, while Bagde termed the convocation a new beginning for students.

A total of 271 students received degrees, including two PhD scholars. Twelve were awarded gold medals and 35 received merit certificates.

Vice Chancellor Prof Nand Kishore Pandey said the university remains committed to quality education.
