Madurai: The mobile psychological counseling program for school students, launched in 2014 by the education department, has come to a standstill, officials and teachers' unions said.

The initiative, aimed at students of classes 6 to 10 in government-aided schools, sought to address issues such as adolescent challenges, family problems, depression, mental distress, sexual health concerns, and academic pressure. Ambulance-shaped mobile vans, costing Rs. 8 lakh each, were deployed, with a doctor as driver and a psychological counselor on a contractual basis. One van was meant to serve two to three districts.

The program stalled due to non-payment of salaries and poor utilization by district officials. Many vans have remained unmaintained and parked at education offices for over four years.

Teachers' union executives pointed out that a 'medical fund', sourced from 1% of the special fee collected from students, was meant to cover van expenses, including salaries and petrol. However, the funds, amounting to several lakhs of rupees, are accumulating in district CEOs' accounts. In one district, a Rs. 10 lakh shed was built to park a van, but its current location is unknown.

The unions urged the education department to fully revive the counseling program following the quarterly exam vacation to ensure students' mental health needs are addressed.
