Chandigarh: The Punjab government will roll out 'Khed Pitara', a play-based learning kit, across government primary schools to promote joyful and activity-based learning among young students, officials said on Saturday.

The initiative, with an investment of Rs 9.3 crore, will benefit around 7.5 lakh children aged 3 to 8 years studying from nursery to Class 2 in 12,856 schools.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the programme aims to make classrooms more engaging and reduce academic pressure by encouraging creativity, exploration and confidence among children.

The kits include toys, puzzles, story cards, flash cards, puppets, activity books and teacher resource materials designed to strengthen foundational literacy, numeracy and communication skills.

Officials said the initiative seeks to shift focus from rote learning to experiential learning and ensure holistic development. Distribution of the kits is in the final stage and expected to be completed by April 1.
