Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has launched a comprehensive state-wide inspection of school and college transport vehicles to ensure compliance with safety norms ahead of the new academic year.

According to officials from the Tamil Nadu Transport Commissionerate, over 34,900 vehicles operated by educational institutions across the state are being examined. The inspection is being jointly carried out by officials from the Transport Department, School Education Department, district revenue offices, and traffic police personnel.

Key safety components, including emergency exits, window locks, steps, fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, hand brakes, and speed governors are being thoroughly checked. “Fitness Certificates (FC) will not be issued to any vehicle that fails to meet safety requirements,” said a senior transport official.

In Chennai, inspections have commenced under various regional transport offices, including Anna Nagar and Meenambakkam. Authorities have been directed to complete the inspection process before schools and colleges reopen after the summer vacation. Reports from all districts will be compiled and submitted to the Transport Commissionerate.

Officials reiterated that only vehicles rectifying reported defects and passing re-inspection will be granted fitness clearance for operation.
