Tambaram: Over the past few days officials of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) have been conducting rallies to create awareness among people on the importance of sending physically challenged children to schools under the Inclusive Education for Disabled (IED) scheme.

With better awareness among parents the enrollment of children with disability and special children in government, private and special schools was on the rise in the past few years.

An awareness programme was conducted to reach out this message across Mylai Balaji Nagar in Pallikaranai.

S. Gunasekaran, Superviser, Block Resource Centre of St. Thomas Mount panchayat union (Rural), said that in addition to the rally, they would be conducting a thorough enumeration of children with special needs throughout the panchayat union.

The identified children would then be admitted to the nearest government, private or special schools.

The officials also said that in 2008-2009, they had identified 231 children in the school-going age with disabilities. Out of which, 132 were admitted in government schools, while 59 were provided home-based education with support from special educators of IED.

The rest were admitted in special schools while children below the age of  five were taken care of at Integrated Child Development Services centres. They hoped that at least 100 more children with special needs would be identified for admission once the present enumeration is over.

Once the enumeration was over, parents of children with special needs would be counselled on the need  of the students and to which school the students had to be sent.

Similarly, 322 children with special needs were identified in last academic year  in St. Thomas Mount panchayat union (Urban).  All of them were accommodated in various schools.
