Chennai: The State Education Policy (SEP) represents the unique identity of Tamil Nadu and is distinct from the National Education Policy, the School Education Department clarified on Tuesday.

The clarification comes amid criticism that the SEP, released by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, largely mirrors the National Education Policy, lacks vision, and shares state data on parents, teachers and students with the Centre.

In a statement, the department said the policy was drafted after extensive consultations with teachers, child rights organisations, education officials and parent associations.

The policy upholds the two-language system instead of the three-language policy and reinforces measures to promote social justice, including the mid-day meal scheme, free textbooks and uniforms. It also emphasizes the expansion of the Numeracy Programme, introduction of artificial intelligence, robotics and agricultural technology in vocational education, and integration of digital facilities in classrooms.

Further, the policy focuses on improving basic infrastructure in schools located in socially and economically backward areas, ensuring admissions, teacher appointments, and protecting social justice.

“This policy is a unique identity of Tamil Nadu,” the department stated.
