Varanasi (UP): Police have arrested a Samajwadi Party student wing functionary for allegedly assaulting a Banaras Hindu University (BHU) student after asking his caste, officials said on Thursday.

Arrest Made
The accused, identified as Himanshu Yadav, is the president of the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha's BHU unit. The outfit is the student wing of the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party.

Incident in Classroom
According to police, the complainant Prashant Mishra alleged that the incident occurred on Wednesday around 11.45 am while he was attending class, when Yadav asked about his caste and course before assaulting him.

Threat Alleged
Mishra also accused the accused of issuing death threats.

Probe Underway
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Bhelupur) Gaurav Kumar said the accused has been arrested and further legal action is underway.

ABVP Condemns
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) condemned the incident, calling it “highly shameful and reprehensible.”

Demand for Action
ABVP Varanasi unit president Pallav Suman alleged that anti-social elements linked to political groups were attempting to destabilise the campus and urged the university administration to take strict action against those involved.
