Chennai: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has permitted students to simultaneously enroll in two degree programs, according to a notification issued by UGC Secretary Manish R. Joshi.

The fresh guidelines, formulated in accordance with the National Education Policy, seek to eliminate academic silos between different streams and foster interdisciplinary learning.

"This initiative aims to bridge the gap between arts, science, technology and other fields while encouraging multidisciplinary education," the UGC circular mentioned.

The commission also highlighted economic factors as a driving force behind this decision, helping students address their financial requirements through dual academic pursuits.

The new framework offers flexible options - students may attend both programs in physical classrooms namaste (ensuring no schedule conflicts), combine one offline with one online course, or pursue both degrees through digital platforms.

The UGC specified that these regulations will not have retrospective effect on students who previously completed dual courses or those currently pursuing doctoral studies without adhering to existing UGC norms.

Only programs offered by UGC-recognized educational institutions will qualify for this dual degree recognition, the commission emphasized.

This policy shift is anticipated to broaden educational opportunities and enhance career flexibility for students nationwide.
