Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) on Sunday cancelled the Group 2 and Group 2A main examinations scheduled to be held across the state, citing technical issues in the allocation of examination centres.
The examinations were slated to be conducted in forenoon and afternoon sessions at centres across Tamil Nadu. However, discrepancies in hall tickets and confusion over examination centre allotment led to the cancellation of all sessions on the day of the exam.
Problems were reported from several centres, particularly in Chennai, where candidates complained of incorrect centre allocation, missing registration numbers and overcrowding.
In some instances, candidates were informed at the last minute that their registration details had been mapped to different centres and were asked to travel to alternate locations.
At a few centres, the number of candidates who arrived reportedly exceeded the seating capacity, leading to delays in verification and entry. Protests were also reported at some locations, briefly affecting traffic in surrounding areas.
Initially, the commission announced postponement of the examination only in Chennai. However, as similar issues were reported from other parts of the state, the TNPSC later decided to cancel the examinations statewide.
The disruption was caused by a software-related glitch that resulted in incorrect allocation of examination halls. He said a fresh schedule for the examination would be announced shortly and that candidates would be given a 15-day notice prior to the re-examination. The commission expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to candidates, said A Shanmugasundaram, Controller of Examinations, TNPSC.
