For thousands of aspirants in Tamil Nadu, cracking the Group 1 exam conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) is a dream that often feels out of reach. The exam, seen as one of the toughest in the state's competitive recruitment process, opens the door to prestigious government positions. But according to Lawrence, a successful candidate now serving in the state government, the right approach makes the challenge manageable.
“Many think Group 1 is extremely difficult. But if you prepare with consistency, it is very much achievable,” he says. His biggest tip? Read newspapers every day.
Lawrence explains that the exam is conducted in three stages. The preliminary test covers subjects like Tamil and general science. The main exam requires candidates to write papers in Tamil or English, along with optional subjects, and includes both abstract and detailed answer formats. The final hurdle, the interview, tests awareness of current events, policy decisions, and general knowledge.
“Your awareness of world news, Indian affairs, state-level policies, agreements, and especially economic developments is what matters most. Newspapers provide all this, so reading them regularly is essential,” he emphasizes.
Apart from study materials, Lawrence highlights the importance of practice. “Solving previous year's question papers under exam-like conditions helps manage time, reduces tension, and improves writing precision,” he notes.
But success, he insists, is not only about study. “Avoid distractions like excessive mobile use or movies. Take care of your health with proper diet, rest, and sleep. Most importantly, keep alive your curiosity to learn.”
For Lawrence, determination and discipline were the deciding factors. His journey is a reminder to aspirants that with the right strategy—and a newspaper in hand every morning—the Group 1 dream can become a reality.
