Chennai: A two-day residential training programme on “Chemical and Petrochemicals Industrial Safety” commenced on Thursday at the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET) in Chennai.

The initiative, organised by the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, aims to enhance industrial safety practices across the sector as part of the Viksit Bharat@2047 Action Plan.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Sanjeev Gupta, former Chief Scientist of the Central Leather Research Institute, at the Tamil Virtual Academy, Kotturpuram. A total of 114 participants from 66 chemical and petrochemical industries, classified as Major Accident Hazard (MAH) units, are attending the training.

CIPET, an ISO-accredited national institution under the Ministry, is spearheading the effort to build skilled manpower and ensure robust safety standards in hazardous industries. The training is designed for mid-level management personnel, focusing on chemical safety management, compliance with safety regulations, and risk mitigation strategies.

The department plans to roll out similar training for all 2,393 MAH units nationwide, underscoring the government's commitment to promoting safety, sustainability, and accountability in one of the country's most vital economic sectors.
