New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has urged parents and guardians to complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for children who have turned seven but have not yet updated their Aadhaar biometric details. The update, crucial for maintaining accurate identity records, is free if done between the ages of five and seven.
UIDAI has begun sending SMS reminders to registered mobile numbers linked to such Aadhaar accounts. As per Aadhaar enrolment norms, biometric data—fingerprints, iris scan, and photograph—are not collected for children below five. However, upon turning five, these biometrics must be updated under the MBU mandate.
The update ensures seamless access to a wide range of services including school admissions, scholarship schemes, entrance exams, and welfare benefits under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) initiatives. Delays beyond the age of seven will attract a nominal fee of ₹100, and failure to update could lead to deactivation of the Aadhaar number.
UIDAI emphasized that an updated Aadhaar serves as a foundational identity document and plays a key role in availing government schemes and educational services. The authority has advised parents to visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorized enrolment centre without delay.
The campaign is part of UIDAI's commitment to keeping Aadhaar data accurate and inclusive across all age groups. “From enrolment to opportunity - Aadhaar empowers every step,” the agency reiterated.
