Puducherry: The Department of Geriatric Medicine at JIPMER, in collaboration with HelpAge India, observed World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2025 with an awareness programme at the Screening OPD Block on Monday.
The event focused on sensitising senior citizens, their families, and caregivers about the growing issue of elder abuse and the importance of prevention, timely reporting, and legal safeguards.
Dr Venugopalan G, Associate Professor, Department of Geriatric Medicine, spoke about the various forms of elder abuse, risk factors involved, and the need for early detection and intervention. Ms Fromsi Lukose, Social Service Officer, emphasised family and societal roles in ensuring a safe and respectful environment for the elderly, urging older persons to voice concerns and seek help when necessary.
A session on legal rights and social protection measures was conducted by Mr Venugopal Ramalingam, Director, HelpAge India, Puducherry & Cuddalore. He highlighted available legal provisions and helplines, encouraging better use of these resources.
About 80 senior citizens and their caregivers participated in the programme. Informational handouts were distributed, and the elder helpline number 14567 was promoted.
The observance underlined JIPMER's commitment to safeguarding the dignity and wellbeing of the elderly.
