The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), established by the Government of India in 1954, has been instrumental in advancing the nation's nuclear power industry, offering a wide range of research opportunities for students while playing a vital role in shaping India's future across various sectors.

The nuclear power sector not only provides clean energy but also drives innovation in science, technology, healthcare, and agriculture. Under the DAE's umbrella, six research centers, three industrial institutes, five public sector enterprises, and three service organizations are operational across the country. The department also funds 11 institutions engaged in basic research.

Key Objectives:
Sustainable Power Generation: Utilizing nuclear energy to produce electricity in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.
Scientific Advancements: Promoting research in nuclear science and related fields to expand scientific knowledge.
Medical Innovations: Pioneering the use of radiation and isotopes, particularly in cancer treatment, to revolutionize healthcare.
Agricultural and Industrial Growth: Leveraging nuclear techniques to improve crop production, preserve food, and develop cutting-edge industrial materials.
National Security: Advancing nuclear weapons technology and maintaining national defense capabilities.

Major Institutions:
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL): Tasked with designing, constructing, and operating nuclear power plants, NPCIL is a key player in meeting India's energy needs.
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC): A leading research institute, BARC focuses on nuclear science, reactor technology, and medical isotopes, contributing to both civilian and defense nuclear programs.
Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR): Specializes in fast reactor and fuel cycle research, crucial for advancing nuclear technology.
Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER): Responsible for identifying and assessing mineral resources like uranium and thorium for nuclear energy production.
