College and school life are not only about academics. The way we speak, behave and treat others also shapes our personality.

Some of the most important lessons are not found in textbooks but in everyday situations. Here are 20 simple rules of courtesy and respect that every student can practise.

1. Respect privacy
Avoid asking classmates personal questions about their age, family, money or appearance.

2. Return what you borrow
Whether it is a pen, book or gadget, return it on time and in the same condition.

3. Listen when others speak
Do not interrupt. Give your classmates, teachers and friends the attention they deserve.

4. Respect someone's phone
If a friend shows you something on their phone, don't scroll through their private messages or photos.

5. Give people space
Respect both physical space and personal boundaries. Not everyone is comfortable with constant interaction.

6. Be a thoughtful guest
When visiting a friend's home, remember that you are a guest. Be polite, responsible and considerate.

7. Say "thank you"
A simple thank you can make someone feel appreciated. Never take another person's help for granted.

8. Keep private matters private
If a friend tells you something confidential, don't share it with others or turn it into gossip.

9. Don't stare
Avoid staring at someone's appearance, clothes, body or personal situation. Respect their dignity.

10. Leave places better
Keep classrooms, libraries, hostels and common areas clean. Leave them ready for the next person.

11. Maintain silence when required
Don't disturb others by talking loudly in classrooms, libraries, laboratories or theatres.

12. Let others exit first
When entering a classroom, lift or bus, allow people to come out first. It is simple and considerate.

13. Avoid loud phone calls
Use headphones and avoid speakerphone in public places, especially when others are studying or working.

14. Respect support staff
Treat cleaners, security guards, drivers, cafeteria workers and other staff with the same courtesy you expect from others.

15. Don't disturb someone wearing headphones
Headphones can be a clear sign that someone wants to concentrate or have some quiet time.

16. Avoid personal questions
Do not repeatedly ask friends about relationships, marriage, children, family problems or other sensitive matters.

17. Keep phones away during conversations
When someone is speaking to you, put your phone aside and be present in the conversation.

18. Never make fun of appearance
Comments about someone's body, skin, clothes, height or other physical features can hurt more than you realise.

19. Recognise boundaries
When someone says they are busy, unavailable or need space, respect their decision instead of taking it personally.

20. Know when to mind your own business
Not every conversation, social-media post or personal matter requires your opinion. Sometimes, maturity means knowing when to stay out of something.

The lesson behind the rules
Being a good student is not just about scoring marks. Respect, empathy, self-control and consideration for others are equally important life skills. These small habits may seem insignificant, but over time they shape the kind of person others trust, respect and want to be around.
