Chennai: The Madras High Court has sought the Tamil Nadu government's stance on the display of caste names at school entrances.
During a hearing on the matter, Justice Bharat Chakravarthy raised key constitutional and legal concerns, questioning whether caste names should be prominently displayed when the Constitution advocates for a casteless society.
The judge posed several critical queries:
Can caste names be displayed at school entrances while promoting a casteless society?
Is it legally permissible to form associations that uphold caste identity?
Do association registration laws allow the formation of caste-based organizations?
How are schools and colleges run by caste-based associations regulated?
What is the Tamil Nadu government's official position on this issue?
The High Court has directed the state government to clarify its stand by February 19.
