Delhi: The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), founded in 1931 by statistician Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, is undertaking a transformative journey as it approaches its centenary in 2031.
Recognized as an institution of national importance under the ISI Act, 1959, the institute has been pivotal in advancing statistical research and applications.
Dr. Koppillil Radhakrishnan, a Padma Bhushan awardee and former ISRO Chairman, now heads ISI's Council for the 2024-26 term. Under his leadership, ISI is implementing the recommendations of the 4th Review Committee, constituted in 2020 and led by Dr. R.A. Mashelkar.
The committee's comprehensive roadmap outlines 61 actionable suggestions under the theme "Reimagine, Reinvent, and Reposition ISI."
Key focus areas include governance reforms, expanded academic offerings in data science and machine learning, infrastructure modernization, and robust partnerships with industry and government.
Short-term initiatives target critical areas like faculty recruitment and facility upgrades, while medium- and long-term goals emphasize academic excellence, interdisciplinary research, and global competitiveness.
Progress is evident in revamped administrative structures, faculty promotions, and the operationalization of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Applied Statistics and Biostatistics. ISI has also embraced digital transformation with hybrid learning and e-governance tools.
The Government of India's continued support underscores its commitment to ISI's vision of becoming a global leader in statistical science.
By its centenary, ISI aims to emerge as a world-class institution addressing India's socio-economic challenges and advancing knowledge globally.
