New Delhi: In a major achievement for Indian sports, the Commonwealth Games Governing Council has approved Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Home Minister Amit Shah described the announcement as a “moment of great pride for the nation.”
India was among several countries that submitted bids to host the Games, which will see participation from athletes representing 72 nations. A Commonwealth Games inspection team had visited Ahmedabad earlier this year to assess its infrastructure and preparedness.
The official confirmation of Ahmedabad as the host city is expected to be made during the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26. With this development, Ahmedabad joins the list of cities that have hosted the prestigious multi-sport event.
The city boasts state-of-the-art sporting infrastructure, including the world's largest cricket arena — the Narendra Modi Stadium — which hosted the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
In a statement, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “This is a proud day for India. Heartiest congratulations to all Indians on the Commonwealth Games' decision to recognise our bid to host the 2030 Games in Ahmedabad. This reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision and tireless efforts to place India firmly on the global sports map through the creation of world-class infrastructure and nurturing of sporting talent.”
