Beijing: China has announced the launch of a new 'K visa' from October 1, aimed at attracting scientists, researchers and technical professionals from across the world, in what is seen as Beijing's response to the tightening of US H1B visa rules.

According to an official statement, the decision, approved in August, revises China's entry and exit regulations for foreigners to facilitate mobility of global talent. The move comes amid growing demand from South Asian professionals and others seeking alternative destinations for work and research opportunities.

The K visa is targeted at young professionals with a bachelor's degree or higher in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) from recognised universities and research institutes in China or abroad. Those engaged in teaching or research in such institutions are also eligible. Applicants must meet prescribed qualifications and submit relevant supporting documents.

Unlike most existing work visas, the K visa does not require applicants to be sponsored by a Chinese employer. Holders will be permitted to participate in academic exchanges, cultural and scientific collaborations, as well as entrepreneurial and business activities after entering China.

Observers have described the new visa category as China's version of the H1B visa, positioning the country as a competing destination for global talent in key knowledge sectors.

China currently has 12 categories of ordinary visas, but officials said the K visa offers significant advantages in terms of flexibility and professional opportunities.
