Chennai: In a significant breakthrough for Indian aquaculture, researchers at the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai, have successfully decoded the genome of the goldlined seabream (Rhabdosargus sarba), locally known as Matti Vaayan in Tamil.
This high-value marine fish, known for its premium white meat and priced between ₹500-₹600 per kg, is a popular choice among Indian consumers. Its ability to thrive in varying salinity conditions makes it ideal for farming in both ponds and cages. The decoded genome is expected to significantly enhance scientific understanding of the species' growth, reproduction, metabolism, and adaptability.
“This reference-level genome will be a key resource for selective breeding, broodstock management, and genetic improvement of the species,” said ICAR-CIBA Director Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal. The initiative aims to boost productivity and sustainability in brackishwater aquaculture.
The genome sequencing project was led by Dr. M. S. Shekhar, Head of Department and Principal Scientist, along with team members Dr. Vinaya Kumar Katneni, Dr. Ashok Kumar Jangam, Dr. Raymond, and Dr. Lal.
The development positions the goldlined seabream as a strong candidate for expanding India's aquaculture footprint through science-driven strategies.
