Chennai: Department of Science and Technology (DST) Secretary Prof. Abhay Karandikar on Wednesday virtually inaugurated India's National Hub for Quantum Communication — the IITM C-DOT Samgnya Technologies Foundation — established under the National Quantum Mission.

Located at the IIT Madras Research Park, the hub aims to accelerate research, innovation and deployment in quantum-secure communication technologies through collaborations with academia, industry and global partners. It will also support deep-tech startups, national-scale testbeds and capacity-building initiatives.

Speaking at the launch, Prof. Karandikar said the quantum communication hub is one of the most well-funded under the mission and holds strong potential for India to gain a global edge in secure communication technologies. He added that liberal funding guidelines would allow the hub to support promising startups working in the field.

The Foundation will focus on quantum cryptography, post-quantum security, quantum key distribution (QKD) networks, quantum memory, repeaters and satellite-based quantum communication.

IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti said the centre would bolster India's efforts toward self-reliance in emerging communication technologies and bring together experts from classical and quantum domains. The event featured live demonstrations of QKD systems and innovations by startups.

Project Director Prof. Anil Prabhakar and CEO Ravindra Barlingay said the initiative marks a major step in building a world-class quantum communication ecosystem. The Foundation will also drive flagship programmes such as 'Quantum Voyages 2025' to advance indigenous quantum solutions.
