Nainital: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday said that education should not only make individuals self-reliant but also inspire them to serve society with humility and contribute to nation-building.

Addressing the 20th convocation of Kumaun University here, the President said education forms the foundation of a nation's development by strengthening intellect, skills, and moral character. She urged students to dedicate their learning towards the upliftment of the underprivileged, describing this as the “true religion” that brings happiness and fulfillment.

Highlighting India's rapid economic growth, Murmu said the government's policy initiatives are creating vast opportunities for youth, and higher education institutions must encourage students to harness these opportunities.

The President stressed the importance of promoting research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and lauded Kumaun University's efforts in these areas. Emphasising a multidisciplinary approach, she expressed confidence that the university would continue advancing quality education and sustainable practices.

Murmu also called on faculty and students to engage with nearby villages to identify and help resolve local challenges, underscoring universities' social responsibility. She noted that students have a vital role in achieving the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047.

Earlier, the President offered prayers at the Naina Devi Temple and visited the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram at Kainchi Dham.
