New Delhi: Medical experts have warned of a sharp rise in obesity, hypertension, and heart attacks among India's youth, urging a nationwide shift toward 'Blue Zone' lifestyles — inspired by regions known for longevity through active living, plant-based diets, and community bonds.

Speaking at the HEAL OneHealth Connect Series, Dr Sanjeev Gera of Fortis, Noida, said nearly half of all heart attacks now occur in people under 50, with cases seen as young as 25. He cited Delhi's 60 per cent teenage obesity rate as “a ticking time bomb” and called for preventive health checks starting at 25.

India Habitat Centre Director Prof. K G Suresh highlighted the role of communication and community engagement in public health, proposing “Swasthya Rankings” for localities to promote healthier neighbourhoods.

Dr G S Grewal, former Delhi Medical Association president, suggested a “Pink Zone” model — practical lifestyle changes, early detection, and vaccination — as an achievable urban alternative.

Experts including psychiatrist Dr Nimesh Desai and dietitian Dr Rekha Sharma also emphasised mental resilience and mindful eating as essential to reversing the lifestyle epidemic.

The event concluded with a call to blend traditional wellness practices with modern medical care for holistic health.
