Chennai: IIT Madras has taken a significant step towards revolutionising tech-enabled education by integrating AI-powered tools into its BS Degree in Data Science and Applications.
The initiative, led by the institute's Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), is being implemented in collaboration with Scaler School of Technology (SST), known for its applied computer science pedagogy and AI innovations.
The tools, now being rolled out at scale following a successful pilot involving 500 students, are aimed at providing personalised learning experiences.
Key features include an AI Interview Companion, a 24/7 AI Teaching Assistant for coding support, AI-generated flashcards and class notes, and gamified revision tools. The pilot yielded notable outcomes, including over 600 mock interviews, a 44% rise in coding task completions, and high student engagement across the tools.
"This collaboration reflects our mission to make high-quality education accessible at scale," said Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, Chair of CODE, IIT Madras. “These AI tools supplement our curriculum, allowing students to receive timely feedback, build confidence, and practise independently.”
Scaler's contribution draws from its four-year residential program at SST, where students and senior engineers co-developed several AI features now integrated into IIT Madras's academic platform. The partnership was formalised through an MoU signed on June 2, 2025, valid for one year with provisions for renewal.
Abhimanyu Saxena, Co-founder of Scaler, said, “We're proud to support IIT Madras in its mission. This partnership allows us to bring classroom-tested innovations to a broader audience.”
The tools bear SST attribution while IIT Madras retains full control over data and student policies.
With over 35,000 students enrolled, IIT Madras's BS in Data Science program is among the largest and most inclusive in India, setting benchmarks for scalable, digital-first education.
