Chennai: A total of 3,227 students graduated at the 62nd Convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) held on Thursday, with 3,661 degrees, including joint and dual degrees, awarded.
The event witnessed the conferment of 529 PhDs, including joint and dual degree doctorates with foreign institutions.
National Security Advisor Shri Ajit Doval was the Chief Guest, while Padma Vibhushan awardee and Bharatanatyam exponent Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman of the Board of Governors, presided over the function, with Director Prof. V. Kamakoti presenting the Director's Report.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Doval called upon students to intertwine personal success with service to the nation. “You are the most fortunate generation in 1,000 years of Indian history. Let your talent serve society. Innovate not just for accolades but for impact,” he said, stressing the need for indigenous technologies.
Dr. Goenka urged graduates to contribute to the vision of a developed India by 2047, stating, “This generational responsibility belongs to you, the class of 2025. Ask yourself how you can help move India—not just in GDP, but in dignity and equity.”
Dr. Subrahmanyam emphasized interdisciplinary research and lauded IIT Madras for incorporating fine arts into its admissions. “The fusion of science and metaphysics is the way forward. Only IITM can foster that.”
During the year, IIT Madras incubated over 100 deep-tech startups, filed more than 400 patents, and saw its first startup, Ather Energy, go public. The institute raised ₹320 crore through alumni and CSR contributions, and received 982 industry-linked projects worth ₹906 crore.
IIT Madras also inaugurated an Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) Corridor, led by an interdisciplinary team, to promote research in Indian sciences, philosophy, and heritage.
Top medal winners included Anirudh B S (President of India Prize), Anish Anand Pophale, Abhinav R, and Rajagopal Subramaniam C.
