Chennai: IIT Madras has developed an Integrated Road Safety Dashboard aimed at strengthening e-governance and improving road safety outcomes through coordinated, data-driven policymaking, officials said on Thursday.

The digital platform integrates data from multiple departments and presents real-time analytics to help authorities identify risk areas, assign responsibility, track interventions and assess outcomes. Designed as a scalable and configurable digital public infrastructure, the dashboard can be adopted by states and Union Territories in line with their road safety frameworks.

Developed by RBG Labs at IIT Madras, the dashboard has already been adopted by the Odisha government and is now positioned for wider replication. It was launched by Odisha during Road Safety Month 2026, with the state customising workflows and indicators while aligning with a common national framework.

Odisha Transport Commissioner-cum-STA Chairman Amitabh Thakur said the dashboard provides a strong analytical and monitoring backbone for sustained enforcement and interventions. “By adopting a data-driven, human factors-based approach, we are empowering officers with modern tools to improve road safety and save lives,” he said.

Road safety has emerged as a national priority, involving multiple agencies such as transport, police, health and urban development departments. In the absence of integrated systems, interventions have often remained fragmented with limited accountability, officials said.

IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti said road safety requires coordinated action and intelligent use of data. “This dashboard shows how academic research and technology can directly support governance and public service delivery,” he said.

RBG Labs head Venkatesh Balasubramanian said the platform goes beyond data collection and functions as a governance reform tool enabling outcome-oriented implementation.

The dashboard builds on the Integrated Road Accidents Database (eDAR) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, translating accident data into actionable insights. Key features include an officials' portal with location intelligence and performance monitoring tools, and a citizen portal for reporting accidents, hazards and grievances.
