London: A 30-year-old Indian student was stabbed in a street attack in Worcester, central England, and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital, police said.
West Mercia Police on Friday appealed to witnesses for information regarding the incident, which occurred on Barbourne Road around 4:15 am on Tuesday, November 25. The victim, locally unidentified, has been reported in India as Vijay Kumar Sheoran from Jagrambas village in Haryana's Charkhi Dadri district.
“He was taken to hospital but sadly died later that day,” the police statement said. Five men have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently out on bail, while a sixth suspect previously detained has been released with no further action.
Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse said the force is conducting extensive enquiries to determine the circumstances leading to the man's death. Officers will continue gathering evidence at the scene over the weekend. Holehouse appealed to the public to provide any information, however minor, that could assist the investigation.
In India, Charkhi Dadri MLA Sunil Satpal Sangwan expressed shock over the incident, extending condolences to the family. He urged the Indian government to intervene promptly to ensure the victim's remains are repatriated and called for a transparent, time-bound investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident has raised concerns over student safety in the UK and underscores the need for vigilance in urban areas.
