Panaji: The number of jobs in the management sector is expected to rise with the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), but they will require a different skill set than currently needed, according to Goa Institute of Management Director Ajit Parulekar.
Contrary to concerns about AI reducing job opportunities, Parulekar said the challenge for management institutions is to prepare graduates for the new roles that will emerge.
"As far as management is concerned, the number of jobs created is going to rise and outnumber the jobs that are closing. Having said that, the people losing jobs may not have the skills for the new roles," he told PTI.
Parulekar added that organisations will have unfilled positions due to a lack of candidates with the right skill sets. He highlighted the growing role of technology in management education.
"Tech cycles are making a big difference across sectors. While some technologies are sector-specific, others like data analytics, IoT, blockchain, and the digital space are transforming management," he said.
Pointing out the rapid pace of technological change, Parulekar said, "We started a big data analytics programme in 2018. Seven years later, we realised it needs a complete revamp. Today, managerial applications of analytics, AI, and machine learning are more critical than having data scientists alone."
He emphasised that technology's application differs across disciplines. "Marketing analytics differs from healthcare analytics, financial analytics, or HR analytics. Students also need agility and lifelong learning skills to succeed in long careers. Experiential and autonomous learning are key parts of our programme."
