New Delhi: MIT University Sikkim has emerged as a preferred choice for students across India, receiving over 1,000 complete applications and nearly 5,000 inquiries within a month of opening admissions for the 2026 academic session, university officials said.
Vice-Chancellor Deepak Kher said the university plans to admit only 100-150 students after a rigorous screening process focused on aptitude, skills and career intent. The selective intake aims to ensure job readiness and focused mentoring, he added.
Education experts attribute the growing interest to factors such as UGC recognition under Section 2(f), assured degree validity for higher education and employment, a strong emphasis on practical and vocational learning, and affordable fees. Courses are designed with significant hands-on components, including internships and live projects.
Officials also cited Sikkim's safe and peaceful environment and state government support as contributing factors. Analysts say the trend reflects a shift among students towards outcome-oriented, skill-focused education models.
