New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report about the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old college student on the Gopalpur sea beach in Odisha's Ganjam district.

According to reports, the incident took place on June 15 when the victim had gone to the beach with a male friend to celebrate a festival. She was allegedly overpowered and sexually assaulted by a group of around 10 men.

Taking serious note of the incident, the NHRC has issued notices to the Odisha Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

The Commission has directed that the report must include the current status of the investigation, the medical condition of the victim and details of any compensation or counselling provided to her by the state authorities.

As per the media report dated June 16, the victim has been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for medical examination. Police have reportedly detained seven suspects in connection with the case.

Further investigation is underway.
